The Hirschgang is a curved, white-walled hallway with an extremely reverberant acoustic in the main building of the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany. While participating in the summer academy for composers there in 2013, I appreciated the sense of community and immersion in art that pervades the whole facility – dozens of resident artists have left unexpected installations on site for their successors to discover. Wanting to contribute to that spirit, I wrote this piece, or musical game, as a text score, performable by musicians and non-musicians alike. The score outlines a process for passing sounds up and down the hallway, but leaves many elements indeterminate, inviting the performers to play with sound and communication in the visually and sonically stunning space of the Hirschgang.
