Commissioned by Network for New Music for their 40th Anniversary Season

Premiered by Network for New Music Ensemble, February 21, 2025, Philadelphia, PA

Like most of us, Switch Slides is always arriving and always developing, though its rate of change changes. A small bank of electric guitar sounds—many of them noisy and/or slide-y—spawned the whole thing. I wrote it in a space of curiosity, asking “what would happen if the music does                    ?” and letting myself follow whatever paths opened. Sometimes this uncovered subconscious rules I had for my music and made me enforce or jettison them. The piece wanted to be pretty exuberant, and to change moods and timbres a lot, so I let it.

Switch Slides was commissioned by Network for New Music for their 40th Anniversary season, which also happens to be the year I turned 40. I hope we both keep practicing curiosity and questioning our own rules through our next 40 years of arriving and developing.
